Karbi Anglong: An adult elephant was killed after being rammed down by the Mariani-Guwahati BG express train near Gharial Dubi area in Bokajan under Karbi Anglong district on the night of May 29.

This tragic incident has taken place despite persistent efforts by the railways and forest authorities to prevent elephant death on railway tracks.

As per forest officials, the incident occurred at around 8 pm when the speeding train mowed down the elephant while it was trying to cross the railway track. The deceased elephant was one among a herd of 5 to 6 elephants crossing the railway tracks.

The deceased was left behind by the group and the other elephants who were crossing the railway tracks managed to get away safely.

Notably, the impact of the collision was so acute that the elephant was thrown about 20 feet off the track and the strike immediately led to his death.

Following the incident, the forest officials rushed to the spot and pulled out the carcass of the dead elephant on the morning of May 30 with the help of a crane.

The post-mortem and other formalities were conducted by a team of veterinarians and the forest department later buried the carcass in a nearby tea garden.

Earlier this month, a dead body of a wild elephant was spotted at Siruwani, the adjoining area of the sixth addition of KNP. A team of foresters and veterinarians reached the site and conducted the postmortem.

The approximate age of the elephant was 25, stated a forest official. The cause of the death was yet to be ascertained.
